One Chapter Opens as Another Ends

My first concert of the new year was at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles (surprise, surprise) where I traveled to see the Watkins Family Hour plus special guests on January 11, 2017. Sean Watkins took to the stage with his guitar and wished the audience a “Happy New Year,” while Sara picked up her ukulele and wondered how late into January it was appropriate to remark on the new year. The first song, played as a duo, was one written by Bobby Darin and Woody Harris, “Early in the Morning.” Upon finishing they introduced the talented Tristan Clarridge,

Let Life Overflow

July 7, 2016 saw Sara Watkins in concert at Largo at the Coronet for the release of her new album Young in All the Wrong Ways. It is beautiful album that shows an edgier side of Sara than we’ve seen on her previous releases. The album was produced by Punch Brothers member Gabe Witcher and supported on the recording by other musicians who have also frequented the Largo stage, including Jon Brion, Sean Watkins, Tyler Chester, Jay Bellarose, and Benmont Tench. At the show, Sara played through the album in order and then tacked on a few favorites as a

Just Don’t Break Up the Connection

Thursdays, April 21, 2016, Largo at the Coronet hosted a show titled “Sweethearts,” featuring musicians Susanna Hoffs, Jon Brion, Greg Leisz, Paul Bryan, Chris Bruce, Abe Rounds, and Sara Watkins. With all of these talented musicians on the bill it seemed to be the making of an excellent concert. Then, that afternoon news broke of the death of music legend Prince. The Bangles had famously recorded a song written by Prince, “Manic Monday.” How would the news affect this concert and the song choices, if at all?  Well, as much as Jon Brion and Greg Leisz tried to blast the

Then You Slip into the Masterpiece

Following the Watkins Family Hour show at Largo at the Coronet on December 22, 2015 (see my post “We’ll Steal Your Heart Away“), there was a show in The Little Room led by musician David Garza.  Various combinations of the Watkins Family Hour band came on stage to play on a total of fifteen diverse songs. Here’s a rundown of what happened. David started off the night with, as he said, “something from the ’80s,” as he began to play the chords to “Roxanne” on guitar. Someone in the audience shouted out that it was 1977 (the song was actually

We’ll Steal Your Heart Away

The Watkins Family Hour always puts on a good show at Christmas time and this year was no exception. The concert was held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Largo at the Coronet. In the pre-show rundown we were told that this would be the last Watkins Family Hour at Largo until possibly April. Sara and Sean Watkins stepped onto the stage first, wishing us all a “Merry Christmas” and Sean started off the show singing, “There’s a last time for everything.” The band was then invited onstage and consisted of Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Don Heffington on drums, Greg
